Contest Solution 1 Who Am I? Answer: Alison Krauss Clue #1: In 1993, I was the youngest person to become a member of the Grand Ole Opry. Clue #2: I was 5 years old when I first took up the violin. Clue #3: I rode the "Silver Rail" when I was 12. Clue #4: In 1984, I won the fiddle contest in Winfield (13 years old). Clue #5: I soon went from Classified Grass to the Station. Clue #6: It was "too late to cry" before I reached "two highways". Clue #7: Some have said that I've brought bluegrass "to the forefront of the outside world". Clue #8: I refuse to fit into the commercial zone and compromise my acoustic artform. "Alison Krauss was born in Decatur, Illinois, July 23, 1971, and grew up in Champaign, Illinois, after age three. Krauss said, 'My parents put my brother (Viktor) and I in every program you can imagine: swinning, gymanastics, art classes, and sports...They wanted to make sure we had things to keep up interested.' The incident which brought her to the fiddle was a string program at her school. At age five, she took violin lessons on a half-size violin. at six, she began listening to such tunes as Hank Williams' song 'Honky-Tonk Blues.' At age nine, she attended her first fiddle contest, bought a book of fiddle tunes, and began learning the fiddle just for the fun of it. She came in fourth in the Tweleve Years and Under category in her first contest. Though these contest in Illinois were not as competitive as those in Texas, they prepared her for what was to come. Even at this early age she exhibited on oncanny ability to remember tunes, note-for-note, weeks after she heard them only once. Contest #3 Solution Name This Tune #2: Played on a Weber Yellowstone Octave Mandolin This tune is a fiddle classic...hint: "You can see the moon reflecting on the water."...for some reason I thought that this tune was "Midnight on the Water" at first...hence the off-the-wall clue above. Many were still able to name this tune inspite of the clue. Very impressive!
